Pattingham Vineyard
Sometimes things happen for a reason and we feel this is case in point. We had planned this year to expand our offering of English wines both still and sparkling and wanted wines to complement our excellent local vineyard wines from Welcombe Hills as well as our more premium English Sparkling wines from, Henners, Rathfinny and Nyetimber.
Last month we talk a call from Jane Wilcox the owner of Pattingham Vineyard who wanted to introduce us to her wines. They have had great accolades in the press and are already listed by Selfridges, so we thought we better take a look.
Last week we were thrilled to be Jane and her daughter, Stevie who joined the business in 2022. This is still a very young project, with the vines only being planted in 2019 so have only had 3 vintages or so under their belts, but from what we tasted they have a good future both vines and business ahead of them.
Pattingham Vineyard is based in south Staffordshire on the outskirts of the village of Pattingham; the land is south facing, natural spring water and good free-draining sandy topsoil, has provided perfect growing conditions for the vines.
From the tasting we have chosen to list 4 of their wines, the white called Nurton Meadow made from 100% Solaris grapes and is light delicate floral aromas, good balance acidity and at 12% vol. is ideal for spring/summer drinking.
The rosé from Moor Meadow is pale salmon pink in colour and is a blend of 3 grapes, the two white are 77% Siegerrebe, 19% Solaris and then the addition of just 4% Pinot Noir Précoce for the delicate Provencal style colour rosé that’s all a la mode!
The red from Great Moor vineyard is made from Pinot Noir Précoce (a mutation of the Pinot noir grape that ripens earlier so ideal for UK plantings) and is soft red berried fruit aromas and crunchy cherry/ raspberry notes on the palate and is a true delight. Finally, the sparkling white wine is a blend of 50% Seyval Blanc and 50% Pinot Noir Précoce. The 2020 vintage and has had 24 months ageing on lees in bottle.
Lively bubbles carry vibrant citrus aromas, complimented by delicate fruit undertones. A refreshing palate unveils crisp, well balanced acidity, zesty lemon, and hints of pear. The wines are well priced and retail from £15.95 – £24.95 and well worth a bottle or two for Mother’s Day.
Not only are the wines great but the labels are also worth mentioning as the artwork has been done by a local artist Stuart Perry.
Each of the labels feature an original piece of artwork.
