Travaglini Gattinara Tre Vigna, 2019

Following on from our hugely successful Piedmont tasting we have decided to add this to the range of wines we already take from Travaglini (not that you would have known as we have not previously listed on the site but kept in the shop)! This was certainly one of the stand outs from the evening and whilst initially closed it, soon opened out after an hour, so well worth decanting this.

Gattinara is a small DOCG in the far north of Piedmont and is made from 100% Nebbiolo; whilst the more famous wines from the region of Barolo here we are about 45 mins drive north, cooler fresher wines with great aromatics (see Carema DOC wines). This wine is more broody than their Seleccion and Reserva, in part I believe not just from the ‘3’ older vineyards the grapes are selected from, but also the fact 20% is aged in French oak barrels, and the balance in the traditional Slovenian oak barrels, like all their other wines. The grapes can certainly hold their own against the French oak and gives greater structure for it. Drink now and over the next 10 years.

Lovely pomegranate aromas, medium-full bodied and soft tannins. 13.5% vol.
